This is the profile that I've wanted to publish since last winter. I've had to phase through a number of obstacles of life, as we all do, but finally all the elements have come together to make this one of my better phases.
Having discovered the blog Mythwood—the Art of Larry MacDougall quite some time ago, I have admired Larry's conceptual artwork so much that I had wanted to create a post about his work on my other blog The Pictorial Arts, and he kindly consented to that. But the more I thought about it, the more elaborate I wanted the venue to be, until finally I decided to develop a journal format—and wah-la, here we are with Phases 1.1.
I'm proud to have Larry as my first profile subject in this journal. I want to let you know in advance that his blog is populated by many magical creatures, male and female, trolls, giants, and coffee shop patrons. Yet when Larry gave me free rein to pick from his stockpile of art, invariably my choices were of female orientation. So don't blame him for that predominance in the use of his graphics, but somehow I think most of you won't mind.
It is with great pleasure that I declare this online journal officially . . . online.

I like the way it is presented, very beautifull and interesting. I had never heard of Jean-Honore Fragand thanks for introducing me to these new and new to me artists!
ReplyDeleteWonderful—that's a major intent of this journal.
ReplyDeleteThom;
ReplyDeleteThis was an amazing introduction to an inspiring artist.
I shake my head in wonder at the craft, artistry and just plain hard work that I know went into these panels. The presentation was almost perfect (Perfection would only come with a printed and bound volume of these pages, complete with that 'new book smell').
My hat is off.
MD, thank ye so much.
ReplyDeleteLotta work, labor of love!
Printed, bound, new book smell, yes! Don't forget that clay-coat paper stock—so smooth, no finger prints.
Really good. I echo the above comments.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful new blog -- and a future return destination for me! Fascinating stuff.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post and an elegant blog. I see this will be a return destination for me. Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteI like this--will def. be looking forward to more. Also nice to see an artist like Larry MacDougall who's not afraid to tip his hat to contemporary influences
ReplyDeletesuch an incredible post and artist. I loved seeing each and every sketch! thank you for sharing these and Larry!
ReplyDeleteYay, thanks folks, I'm really grateful to Larry for letting me present his work like this!
ReplyDeleteYou make my husband look good!!!! :D
ReplyDeleteYour sense of design is beautifully elegant, Thomas and I would love to see what you could do with artists such as Wallace Tripp and Harry Roundtree! (Two of my top most favorite illustrators)
Hi Pat Ann! As you well know, that's like saying to the Louvre, you make Leonardo look good. But I know what you're saying, and thanks!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for suggestions, too! I've got a fair amount of Tripp to work with, but I'll have to round up some Roundtree. I'll put those into the hopper and see what hops out :>} Oh, and at some point, I hope you'll allow the Phases treatment for you and your work as well.
Hi Thom,
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful work. I'm intrigued, reading about Larry's influences and the link between animation and illustration. It makes me realize what I love about quality illustration- the sense of drama and movement. Your presentation is expertly designed, and your portraits of Larry are seamlessly integrated, yet unique. The energy of Larry's work, and of your page layout makes me want to buy the book! So, I hope you are able to collaborate and create a print version showcasing Larry's work. I agree with something you said in the narrative, that Larry's sketches have as much vitality as formalized and published illustration. I am just a "lay" person; not an artist, but I appreciate art on an intuitive level with a smattering of knowledge, and Larry's faces and figures, like your own, capture definitive personality and mood. Thank you for this feature!
Absolutely lovely! I think it is a wonderful way to get to know you as an artist, and now even more folk will have that opportunity. Congratulations on a well-deserved bit of appreciation from the world at large!
ReplyDeleteA very beautifully realized showcase for Larry's wonderful art. What a great project - and thank you both for sharing!
ReplyDeleteVery nice! Like it it.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is FANTASTIC! I don't think i've seen anything else really like it.. the idea of showcasing art and making and online book is just wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see a downloadable pdf link too, so I can reference the books.
Larry's work is so fantasical, and really special. The lines and motion and soft colour really catches the spirit of nature and the outdoors.
Thanks so much for sharing!
Fantastic job! his figure studies are superb, great layout, would love to see the same treatment for say: Heather Theurer, Greg Ruth, Yuko Shimizu, Mike Mignola or going back a bit A Gallen Kallela
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't know what to say. beautiful, Thomas.
